ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The Australasian Sexual Health Conference is held by the Australasian Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and will incorporate the 13th IUSTI World Congress. It will be held back-to-back with the Australasian HIV/AIDS Conference 2012 (24th Annual ASHM Conference). In recent years, the two annual conferences were held back-to-back in Canberra (2011), Sydney (2010), Brisbane (2009), Perth (2008), Melbourne (2006), and Hobart (2005). In 2007 the Australasian Sexual Health Conference was held as a stand alone conference in the Gold Coast. Melbourne has now been confirmed as the location for the 2012 Conference.
Delegates to the conference come from a range of professional backgrounds including doctors, nurses and counsellors, as well as those involved in public health, Indigenous health and health promotion aspects of HIV and STI control. Over 500 delegates typically attend the conference. The Conference focuses on key public health issues which have dominated media coverage, including Indigenous sexual health, screening of young people for Chlamydia and safer sex practices as better ways to avoid the risks of HIV and other STIs.
Since 2005 the Conference has been held back-to-back with the Australasian HIV/AIDS Conference with one full day of overlap, providing a unique opportunity to look at HIV in the broader context of sexual health. Together, the conferences attract more than 1000 delegates from across the region.
